What should I bring?

You do not need to bring anything extra. We are fully equipped to care for your pet during their stay with us. Below is an overview of what we provide, and some documents that you need to bring.
  1. Vaccines:
  2. Current vaccine records showing proof of: (Vaccines must be verified before we can accept your pet. Pets without vaccine verification will not be accepted.)

    For Dogs:

    • Distemper/Parvo virus
    • Bordetella
    • Rabies for dogs

    For Cats:
    • Distemper
    • Rabies

    * Pets without vaccine verification will not be accepted
    * Pets less than 3 months of age will not be accepted

  3. Emergency Number:
  4. A phone number where you, a friend, or relative can be reached in case of an emergency

  5. Special Diets:
  6. We feed all of our four legged guests premium dry food of IAMS. If you wish to have your pet fed another brand, feel free to bring that in along with your pet. Please bring only the amount of food needed for your pet's stay. Clearly labeled individual feeding packs are most convenient. Please, no oversize bags or tubs of food. We will provide dishes for food and water. Along with litter and litter pans for your feline.

  7. Medication:
  8. Medication if your pet is being treated for any medical condition. Please place your pet's medication into daily pill organizers, clearly labeled with the date and time. (Example: 1/1 AM). Medication administered between 7AM and 6PM. Download Medical Instruction Form

  9. Bedding:
  10. We will provide your pet with appropriate bedding. All bedding is thoroughly washed and sanitized between uses. * Due to sanitary purposes we will not accept bedding from home.

  11. Other Items:
  12. We provide dishes, bedding, cat litter, litter pan, and IAMS dry food for cats. We provide dishes, bedding, and IAMS dry dog food for dogs. Bring any treats or toys you would like your pet to enjoy while boarding at Gochenauer Kennels. We kindly ask that you please keep toys and other belongings to a minimum.

    * Please do not bring ceramic bowls, glass or other breakable items.
    * We are not responsible for belongings lost or destroyed.

Will my pet get fleas at the kennel?

Our facility has been constructed to discourage the infestation of fleas and ticks. All pets are checked periodically and any pets infested will be treated with flea and tick spray. Please let us know what protection you are using on your pet.

What happens if my pet needs medical attention?

If your pet should require medical attention while in our care, our customary procedure will be to call your veterinarian and go by the instructions. Should the nature of your pets illness require an office visit, we reserve the right to utilize our on-call veterinarian depending on the illness and travel required to reach your veterinarian. Please read and complete an emergency care contract at time of check in and provide contact phone numbers in the event of an emergency.

What is a typical routine for my dog/cat?

Our profesional staff attends to your pets needs daily. To get a feeling to what your pet experiences while staying at Gochenauer Kennels, here is a typical daily routine that we follow -

For dogs:

  • 7:00am - Lights on. Dogs to excercise area. Living quarters are cleaned and disinfected
  • 8:00am - Dogs brought in from exercise area. Breakfast or snacks served. Morning medication administered.
  • 9:00am - Scheduled walks and playtime. Exercise area cleaned and disinfected.
  • 11:00am - Dogs to excercise areas. Living quarters are cleaned and disinfected as needed.
  • 12:00pm - Lunch or snacks served. Noontime medications are administered. Scheduled walks and playtime.
  • 2:00pm - Dogs to excercise areas. Living quarters are cleaned and disinfected as needed.
  • 4:00pm - Scheduled walks and playtime.
  • 5:00pm - Dinner or snacks served. Evening medications are administered.
  • 5:30pm - Dogs to excercise areas. Living quarters are cleaned and disinfected as needed.
  • 6:00pm - Dogs in.
  • Later in evening - Dogs to exercise areas. Beds prepared and snacks served. Dogs in. Lights out for evening.

The dogs have access to the exercise area for fifteen to forty-five minutes during each period. They may alter the scheduled times and duration of the exercise periods due to inclement weather or conditions beyond their control. This is at the discretion of the staff on duty.

Besides the five standard exercise periods there is also two acres of a grass and stoned exercise area surrounded by a six-foot high chain link fence. This area is available upon the dog owner's request for extra exercise sessions. The extra exercise sessions offered are Business Walk, Walk and Brush, and Trail & Treat & Brush. The dog's owner and the kennel representative agree upon the terms and frequency for the extra exercise sessions at the time of admission for boarding. Most of the dog owners request at least one extra exercise session per day with many choosing multiple sessions per day.

For Cats:

  • 7:00am - Lights on. Living quarters are cleaned and disinfected
  • 8:00am - Breakfast or snacks are served. Morning medications are administered
  • 12:00pm - Lunch or snacks are served. Noontime medications are administered. Living quarters are cleaned and disinfected as needed.
  • 5:00pm - Dinner or snacks are served. Evening medications are administered. Living quarters are cleaned and disinfected as needed.
  • Later in evening - Beds prepared and snacks served, Lights out for the evening.

I would like my dog bathed and/or groomed before he or she comes home?

Most dogs leave the kennel just as clean as when they arrive. A limited amount of grooming appointments are available monday through friday. If you want your dog bathed or groomed, arrangements must be made in advance, especially during our peak seasons.

How is my pet exercised?

All pets have ample room in their kennels to play. Dogs are let out to their elimination area 5 times a day. The length of time is based on the weather conditions.

What should I do when I am checking in for the first time?

Please allow a few extra minutes for checking in the first time. Our staff takes time to carefully check vaccine records and get instructions on feeding, walking, medication, and any other special care instructions. We also ask that you complete an Emergency Care Contract.

What does your kennel look like? Is it climate controlled?

Your pet will be cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Our kennels are climate controlled for all seasons. For pictures of our facility, please click this link. What qualifications does your kennel meet?

Gochenauer Kennels is inspected twice per year by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Bureau of Dog Law Enforcement. Gochenauer Kennels are also members of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce.Our groomers are also part of the National Dog Groomer Association. Lastly, we are part of the Pet Care Services Association.

Kennel Tours
Kennel tours are available from mid-September to mid-May, by appointment, on Wednesdays from 4:00pm to 6:00pm. This is when we are at a lower occupancy and it is not as disturbing to the pets in our care. Please call, (717) 569-6151 to set up an appointment for a tour.
